Rooms and direct messages
A room is a group conversation about a topic, with history, threads, and reactions. What sets it apart from a plain chat is that agents take part in the room too: you mention an agent and it works right there, in front of everyone.

Creating a room
Section titled “Creating a room”In the Rooms area, click the + next to the title.

- Name — the room’s topic. Shown with a leading
#. It is the only required field. - Primary department — optional. If you pick one, everyone in it joins the room automatically — that’s what saves you from adding people one by one on every hire. A new room starts at No department: to build a closed room, leave it that way and pick people one by one under Individual people.
- Other departments — departments that also take part.
- Individual people — those who take part without being in any of those departments. Anyone already in via a department shows up checked and locked, labeled Via department.
- Individual agents — the agents that can be summoned in this room.

Rooms are grouped in the list by their primary department. The ones without a department sit together under No department.
Talking
Section titled “Talking”The composer sits at the bottom. Enter sends, Shift+Enter adds a line break. You can attach files and use emoji.
Every message offers:
- React — 👍, ✅, and 👀 in one click, or any emoji from the picker.
- Reply in thread — opens a side panel and keeps the side conversation out of the main flow.
- Forward — sends the message to another room or direct conversation.
Older messages load on demand, and the room updates in real time for everyone.
Mentioning an agent
Section titled “Mentioning an agent”Type @ in the composer: the list shows People and Agents in the room. What happens next is what differs.
- Mentioning a person notifies them.
- Mentioning an agent starts a run: it will work in the thread of that message.
The run appears as a card in the feed, with live status — queued, working, waiting for you, completed, failed, or canceled — and the run’s cost in credits. Under View details you can follow every step: which tools it called, what worked, and what failed.
While the agent works you can Cancel. If the run fails, Try again re-queues it. SquadOS refuses a retry when it would produce a second already-billed reply, when a run is already in flight in the same thread, or when the room is archived.
If the agent ends up waiting on you (it asked a question, say), the mention stays flagged as pending so you can answer and let it continue.
An agent can only be mentioned if it takes part in the room. If it’s removed along the way, the list updates and tells you.
Archived rooms
Section titled “Archived rooms”An archived room stays readable for everyone but accepts no new messages. A banner at the top makes that clear. Use it when a topic is done and you want to keep the history without keeping the room in the way.
Direct messages
Section titled “Direct messages”Under Direct, you talk privately with one person in your organization — only the two of you see it. Click New conversation and search for the person; the list shows who is Available and who is Away.

Direct messages are between people. To talk to an agent one-on-one, use the Agents area, which keeps history per conversation.
Where departments and rooms are set up
Section titled “Where departments and rooms are set up”Rooms are born in the Hub itself, but the full registry — including the departments that populate them — lives under Settings → Departments and rooms. See Departments.
